Smooch Your Pooch at PETCO Valentine’s Pet Party, Best Kiss Contest
Smooch Your Pooch at PETCO Valentine’s Pet Party, Best Kiss Contest
San Diego (Vocus) January 28, 2008
Nothing says “I love you” like a big slobbery kiss from your favorite furry Valentine. Pet parents can smooch their pooch, cuddle their cat or hug their hamster at PETCO’s Valentine’s Pet Party at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9.
The event, sponsored by Hill’s Science Diet, will be held at PETCO locations nationwide. Festivities will include a best pet kiss contest, where pets and their parents can show their best public display of affection (for furry friends only). The top smoochers will be awarded a bag of Science Diet Oral Care Dog or Cat Food and a tin of Yip Yap breath fresheners for dogs. Following the contest, pet parents can return the favor and decorate a heart-shaped cookie for their special friend.
At the event, attendees will pose with their pet and get a free commemorative Valentine’s Day photo frame, pets can “personalize” a Valentine’s card with their very own paw-print “autograph” and PETCO’s groomers will treat pets to a Berry Love spritz and stylish red or pink hair ribbons.
In addition, PETCO offers the following ideas to make Valentine’s Day extra special for the love of your life – your pet:
Dress up your pet for the occasion in a red, pink or rhinestone collar, heart sweater, or flirty T- shirt with sayings such as, “My Mommy is Single” or “Dog Run Flirt.”
Traditional Valentine’s Day gifts such as chocolate and flowers can be harmful to your pet when ingested. Rather than exposing them to a serious health threat, give them a pet-friendly treat, such as cookies from PETCO’s treat bar or one of PETCO’s exclusive Valentine’s dog or cat toys, available in stores nationwide and on PETCO.com.
Treat your pet to a Berry Love Valentine Spa Works in one of PETCO’s grooming salons. The grooming package is designed to clean even the dirtiest pets while creating a clean, luxurious coat and leaving the skin and coat shiny and smelling “berry” great.
Valentine’s Day is special for small animals, too. PETCO offers heart-shaped glass gravel accents to spruce up your finned friend’s home and colored pet bedding that is perfect for pampered guinea pigs, hamsters, rats and mice.
Looking for unconditional love? Visit PETCO’s Think Adoption First kiosk or PETCO’s online adoption partner, petfinder.com, to find adoptable pets in your neighborhood to steal your heart.

CAT, Intercytex Lead the Way in Cambridge’s Biotech Revival
CAT, Intercytex Lead the Way in Cambridge’s Biotech Revival
(PRWEB) February 23, 2006
Biotechs are back, and two Silicon Fen companies are at the forefront of the revival, according to an article in Silicon Fen Business Report.
Biopharmaceutical Cambridge Antibody Technology (CAT) became the first UK biotech firm to parent a blockbuster. It was reported that its HUMIRA antibody, exclusively licensed to the US-based Abbott Laboratories, recorded sales of $ 1.4 billion last year. Drugs with sales of more than $ 1 billion a year are considered blockbusters.
And emerging cell therapy drug developer Intercytex listed on London’s AIM stock market after a dull market forced it to pull the plug on plans to do so in summer last year, the article at http://www.siliconfenbusiness.com reported.
CAT CEO Peter Chambre described the HUMRA result as a “major milestone” and “vital” to the company’s progress.
It is the first CAT-derived antibody to be approved for marketing. It was isolated and optimised in collaboration with Abbott and has been approved for marketing as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in 57 countries, and for psoriatic arthritis and early RA in some European countries and the US. Sales are forecast to increase by 35% to $ 1.9 billion this year as the range of approvals for use expands. CAT receives royalty payments at the rate of 2.688%.
The good news comes after the settlement in October last year of an 18-month long battle with Abbott in the High Court in London on the royalty rate payable on sales of HUMIRA. CAT had bravely launched the action but it was hard to avoid the sense that the case had hung like a dark cloud over the company.
Now the company, which reported a markedly narrower loss in the year to end September ’05, it is in the promising position of having a solid pile of cash, a blockbuster product, and some interesting prospects under investigation.
Meanwhile, Intercytex said it will raise £15 million through its AIM IPO, just under 30% of that from placing shares with existing shareholders. The shares will start at 108p each, which will give the company an initial market capitalisation of about £60 million, placing it around 15th on the CamTech Top 20 Index.
Brokers Piper Jaffray said the placing “generated a broad base of institutional investor interest”, which naturally pleased Intercytex Chief Executive Nick Higgins.
He said the funds will be used to develop and commercialise pipeline products, to create a broad-based, novel woundcare and aesthetic medicine business. Higgins said that these markets “are underserved”. He said the cash should see through to at least 2008.
Not unlike CAT’s legal wrangle last year, Intercytex also hit earlier turbulence with its IPO. Last summer it had to abort plans to list when the City lost its appetite for biotech stocks. The firm turned instead to backers to get through and now finds that its capitalisation will be as much as double as it might have been back then.

Deserts’s Sand Cat Litter Product Called a ‘Bio-Scientific Breakthrough’
Deserts’s Sand Cat Litter Product Called a ‘Bio-Scientific Breakthrough’
Tucson, AZ (PRWEB) December 18, 2010
An innovative Arizona corporation has launched a product that it calls a bio-scientific breakthrough in the $ 1.8-billion a year cat litter business.
First appearing on retailers’ shelves in November, Desert’s Sand™ cat litter is different from other competitors: its all-natural volcanic ash based product (Zeolite) absorbs urine and renders both urine and feces completely odorless.
“That’s good news for all cat owners in many ways,” says Herman Haenert, of Tucson AZ, one of two partners of Desert Veterinary Concepts LLC. “It’s longer lasting since clumping is limited, eliminates all odors, inhibits germs since it has no silica dust, and is environmentally sound because of compostable future use.”
Gone are the worries of cat owners who are pregnant, he adds, because germs usually associated with a cat litter box are greatly minimized.
The Desert’s Sand blend was developed by Haenert and Larry Mohr, of Tempe AZ, the corporation’s other partner. The zeolite blend converts ammonia and other odor-causing compounds into an odorless organic enzyme vapor. That technology eliminates all odors in and around the litter box.
The two say they hope to sell “millions of product pounds” in the first 12 months of retail visibility.
Its desert gold sunset colored packaged product carries a premium price, but isn’t as costly as silicone-based products. “Actually, our product lasts more than twice as long as clay-based products, therefore more economical on a monthly use basis,” explains Mohr. “Ten pounds of Desert’s Sand usually lasts for up to 30 days, compared to four to six days for others (ie. clay, sawdust or newspaper based products).”
Being biodegradable, Desert’s Sand solids can be flushed down the toilet or put in the garbage can, he adds. In a retail market dominated by clay-based products, the Mohr-Haenert product is only one of a few that uses a different base product.
At present, Desert’s Sand is available at a growing number of retail stores in the U.S.. Haenert says the majority of them are Kroger-owned stores across the country, and various east coast retail chain stores and pet shops. Additional information is accessible at http://www.desertssand.com.
Haenert and Mohr are marketing their product with Home and Business Consumer Products in Seekonk MA.
“We now are negotiating with other large retail corporations to carry our product,” Haenert adds, “and also are seeking to license the product internationally.” At present, Desert’s Sand is being manufactured at a facility in the Greater Phoenix area.
Desert Veterinary Concepts, LLC – currently has patent pending status for its technology. Its technology is supported by a NASA- and Boeing-sponsored 250-page media study by Penn State University researchers, which confirms the corporation’s product.
Haenert’s 40-year career in the animal health business spans the distribution, licensing and product development areas. Over the past 30 years, Mohr has formulated products around a biological odor control base in Japan, Malaysia and the U.S. He holds five product patents and was the winner of an international award for industrial innovation.

GlutenFreeMall.com Examines Gluten and Toxins in Pet Foods: Are They Poisoning Your Pet
GlutenFreeMall.com Examines Gluten and Toxins in Pet Foods: Are They Poisoning Your Pet
Santa Rosa, CA (PRWEB) April 12, 2007
GlutenFreeMall.com examines gluten and toxins in pet foods: are they poisoning your pet?
Tainted Wheat Gluten Suspected in Pet Deaths
Recent news indicates that wheat gluten tainted with melamine, a chemical found in Asian fertilizers, and forbidden in American pet foods, has been implicated in the sickness of as many as 8,800 pets, including the deaths of up to 2,797 animals, mostly cats.
Wheat Gluten is Not Part of Your Pet’s Natural Diet
These stories invite a deeper consideration about the role that non-tainted wheat gluten may play in chronic illness and degenerative diseases in our beloved cats and dogs.
The simple truth is that cats and dogs are, by nature, primarily meat eaters. Dogs are historically scavengers, whose natural diets, according to a recent study by biologists Ray and Lorna Coppinger, consisted of “bones, pieces of carcass, rotten greens and fruit, fish guts, discarded seeds and grains, animal guts and heads, some discarded human food and wastes”. In the wild, a dog’s diet included only the smallest amounts of grains, while cats are almost totally carnivorous, and subsist in the wild on a diet made up almost exclusively of small rodents. The natural diets of both cats and dogs provide large amounts of animal protein and fats, water and little in the way of carbohydrates.
Dogs and Cats Should Avoid Grains and Carbohydrates
Most veterinary textbooks agree that both cats and dogs need almost no carbohydrates, yet the so called “recommended” diet of dry pet foods, which is a major component of most pets’ diets, contradicts both their natural diets and the veterinary literature. Many of these dry pet foods are high in carbohydrates, low in animal protein and fats, and contain almost no water — this fact is largely ignored by major pet food producers
Many pet owners who feed canned, moist food to their cats and dogs do so believing that they are providing much-needed meat and moisture to their animals. This is largely true, but what is also true, as came to light in the recent spate of illnesses and deaths from tainted wet formula pet foods, is that wheat gluten is a significant ingredient in such foods.
The problem is that the digestive systems of dogs and cats have not evolved to digest plant proteins like gluten — they are designed to digest animal protein, and gluten is not the same — and feeding these animals foods that contain gluten can result in many of the same problems that afflict their human counterparts who are sensitive to gluten.
Toxic Effects of Wheat Gluten and Other Proteins in Pets — and Humans
According to veterinarian John B. Symes (“Dogtor J”), gluten and other proteins that are added to dog and cat foods are causing many of the same diseases that they cause in their human counterparts. Dogs and cats that have suffered and died from consuming tainted pet food belie the fact that even untainted gluten can cause many of these same problems and more. In human celiacs and gluten-sensitive individuals, untainted gluten can induce both chronic and acute kidney failure. This form of kidney failure is typically called an IgA nephropathy, in which antibodies and immune complexes formed against gluten are deposited in the kidneys, which leads to damage and ultimately failure. Again, this can be chronic leading to persistent blood (microscopic) and protein in the urine or it can be acute.
Dr. Symes claims that it is a startling but well-established fact that the lectins of gluten (wheat, barley, rye) dairy products (e.g. casein, lactalbumin) soy, and corn are all capable of inducing serious health issues in those humans who are sensitive to them. He takes this belief even further and states that such foods are actually not healthy for anyone — neither pets nor humans and they just happen to be more harmful to some individuals than others. According to him anyone who consumes or feeds these foods to their pets on a daily basis will encounter resulting health problems — it is only of matter of time.
All one needs to do, according to Dr. Symes, is to study celiac disease to see how all of this works and appreciate the health implications that accompany this extremely common condition. That a similar condition does occur in dogs and cats has become painfully obvious during the past seven years that he has been studying the issue. Dr. Symes states: “The Irish Setter is a breed known to suffer from gluten intolerance, but it is clear that gluten is affecting many other breeds of dogs and cats. And why wouldn’t it? It is affecting humans and we have had millennia to adapt to eating wheat. Our pets have only been eating wheat-based pet foods for about 20 years now.”
The average American dog lives 12 years — 13 for cats, when their wild counterparts, eating a natural diet, can live to be nearly 30 and 40 years respectively. For the cause, we need look no further than what we put in their bowls. A European study shows that pets fed with table scraps lived an average of three years longer than those fed commercial diets alone. Why? The answer, at least in part, is that highly processed foods cannot possibly contain all of the essential nutrients found in fresh meats, fruits and vegetables.
Dr. Symes’ Top 10 Gluten-Free Foods for Pets–All are gluten-free and low carb:
1) IVD/Royal Canin – L.I.D.s
